Note: The Victorian Era in the United States encompassed several historical periods, and many historians extend the length of the era to the beginning of WWI (1914). The historical periods included in this time frame are the Antebellum Period (which ended with the beginning of the Civil War in 1861), the Civil War itself (1861 - 1865), the Reconstruction Period (1866 - 1877), and the Gilded Age (1878 - 1914). The entire era also encompassed the women's suffrage movement, and the push to settle the American West via wagon train, stagecoach, and beginning in 1869, the railroad.
